Saint Report: St. Lucy.........by Rebecca

Lucy was born toward the end of the third century, the daughter of very rich parents. Lucy was very pretty and more than one young man sought her hand in marriage. From an early age she made a vow of purity. Her Mother arranged for her to marry one of the rich young men, but Lucy didn’t want to marry. She prayed to God that she would find a way to make her mother not make her marry. Her mother became very ill and they went
on a pilgrimage to the shrine of saint Agatha. After their trip her mother was cured of her sickness. Lucy told her mother that she didn’t want to marry, her mother agreed. But the young man did not; he sold her to the King for being a Christian and tried to make her sin or he would take out her eyes. But she would rather her eyes taken out than to sin so he took out her eyes. That is why she is depicted with her eyes in the palm of her hand. God worked a miracle and restored her eyes for her. Soldiers came to take Lucy away and sell her into slavery, but God protected her. No matter how many men tried to lift her, she could not be moved. They were so angry and so afraid of her because they couldn't lift her that they tried to set her on fire! But God protected her from the flames. She told the soldiers that she was protected by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that she wanted to serve God. A sword was run through her heart but she did not die until a priest gave her communion. She died in the year 304.
