Sandwiches

Not those yummy concoctions between two slices of bread, or served open-faced slathered with gravy or cheese.   It is the generation of folks living in that place in life when they get to watch their parents and those who they look up to and admire fade away as old-age takes merciless possession of them.

This is, unfortunately, my place in life.  With two of our children still at home needing to be raised and our parents getting up in age, we feel the pressure from both ends.  We have already said goodbye to my knight's father a few years ago now.  That was a rude awakening for all of us, but to my surprise, it came a-crashing down on my mom.  Not totally sure why it hit her so hard, but it did.  I suppose it would bug me if I was in her place.

Being so far away does not make this phase any easier, believe me.  There are days when I know my parents need my help, or just for me to be there to talk with, comfort them in their transition; but I'm a clear day and a half away from both of them.

of course it's been hard on your mom: they spent their lives together. they probably had their problems (like any other couple), but they were together for so long.
Now you feel like a sandwich (funny that it sounds) but it's ok. Devoting yourself to the people you love - is what our lives are all about.
You are just tired. Hang in there!
